GAC GA8

2026-09-21 21:40:02

The Trumpchi GA8 is an executive (E-segment) flagship sedan under GAC Trumpchi, serving as the brand's cornerstone product in its bid to move upmarket. The model went through two key development milestones: its initial market launch in 2016 and an all-new generation built on the GPMA platform in 2020. No further updates were introduced after the 2020 model year, and as of 2026, the entire model line has been discontinued.

Model Overview

Positioned as an executive mid-to-large sedan, the Trumpchi GA8 served as a strategic flagship model for GAC Trumpchi to penetrate the premium sedan segment and round off its product portfolio. In its initial 2016 iteration, the official recommended retail price ranged from RM156,800 to RM299,800. For the 2020 all-new generation, pricing was adjusted downward to between RM156,800 and RM226,800 across four variants: the 390T Exclusive Edition, Prestige Edition, Premium Edition, and Supreme Edition. The 2020 lineup was powered exclusively by GAC’s third-generation 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an Aisin six-speed automatic transmission, consolidating the powertrain lineup and dropping the previous low- and high-output 1.8T and 2.0T engine choices from 2016.

Design Language

Aesthetically, the all-new Trumpchi GA8 (2020 model) adopts the "Five-bar Soaring Clouds, Eight-sided Prestige" design philosophy. The front fascia is dominated by a prominent "Flying Dynamics 3.0" octagonal chrome front grille flanked by "Dual Blade" LED headlamps, delivering a wide and commanding road presence. Along the sides, a continuous shoulder line defines its elongated silhouette, complemented by a gently sloping fastback C-pillar that helps achieve a low drag coefficient of 0.28 Cd. The rear features split polygonal LED tail lamps and dual exhaust tailpipes. The interior embraces a "Diamond Cockpit" theme, highlighted by twin 12.3-inch dual continuous screens. The dashboard is trimmed in soft-touch materials, suede upholstery, and wood grain inserts, accompanied by a crystal electronic gear selector, with various light and dark interior colourways on offer. In terms of dimensions, the 2020 model measures 5,003 mm long, 1,868 mm wide, and 1,505 mm tall, with a 2,900 mm wheelbase; by comparison, the original 2016 version measured 5,003 mm long, 1,910 mm wide, and 1,508 mm tall with a 2,907 mm wheelbase, reflecting a minor reduction in width.

Powertrain & Performance

Under the bonnet, the all-new Trumpchi GA8 (2020 model) comes standard across the range with GAC's third-generation 2.0TGDI direct-injected turbo engine (code-named 4B20J1). It incorporates 350-bar high-pressure direct injection, GCCS combustion control, DCVVT dual variable valve timing, and an electronically controlled variable-displacement oil pump. This unit puts out a maximum output of 185 kW (252 PS) and a peak torque of 390 Nm across a broad band from 1,750 to 4,000 rpm. Drive is sent to the front wheels via an Aisin third-generation six-speed torque-converter automatic transmission with manual mode. The official 0–100 km/h acceleration time is rated at 7.8 seconds, with real-world testing yielding around 8.79 seconds and a top speed of 210 km/h. Fuel consumption is rated at roughly 7.5 to 8.0 L/100 km under the WLTC cycle, with real-world combined testing returning around 9.9 L/100 km including stop-and-go city driving. The original 2016 model was offered with 1.8T (270T) and 2.0T (320T) engines; the older 2.0T produced 138 kW and 300 Nm, highlighting a notable generational performance upgrade in the 2020 model.

Chassis & Handling

In terms of underpinnings, the all-new Trumpchi GA8 features a premium suspension setup comprising a front double-wishbone and a rear multi-link independent arrangement, with extensive use of aluminium alloy components in the rear and anti-roll bars fitted at both ends. Typically found on luxury executive sedans, this setup is engineered to balance ride comfort with dynamic handling. Chassis tuning was jointly carried out by Germany's MB-TECH team (which was involved in AMG chassis development) and GAC's chief chassis engineer Marco (formerly with Fiat and Alfa Romeo). The car uses a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout with electric power steering, four-wheel disc brakes (ventilated at the front), and an electronic parking brake. Notably, the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) is permanently enabled by default and cannot be fully disengaged, which limits maximum power delivery during hard driving or aggressive acceleration runs.

Cabin & Equipment

On the infotainment and technology front, the all-new Trumpchi GA8 features the ADiGO intelligent connected ecosystem, integrating autonomous driving, IoT connectivity, cloud services, and big data capabilities. Higher-spec 2020 variants (Premium Edition and Supreme Edition) receive a dual 12.3-inch continuous screen setup (combining a fully digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen infotainment display), whereas lower-spec trims get a 7-inch instrument cluster and an 8-inch infotainment screen. Developed in partnership with Tencent, the system comes pre-installed with connected navigation, QQ Music, and in-car WeChat, enabling drivers to interact via comprehensive voice control or dedicated steering wheel buttons. The cabin features two-tone perforated leather or NAPPA leather upholstery (on high-spec 2016 units), with top-tier variants adding ventilated/heated front seats and sunshades for the rear side windows and rear windscreen.

Safety & Driver Assistance

Safety-wise, the 2020 Trumpchi GA8 is comprehensively equipped with 14 active safety and driver assistance features delivering Level 2 semi-autonomous driving. Key ADAS features comprise Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Traffic Jam Assist (TJA), Integrated Cruise Assist (ICA), Automated Parking Assist (APA), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Protection (AEB/AEB-P), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Lane Change Assist (LCA), Door Open Warning (DOW), and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). On the passive safety front, it is equipped with nine airbags, an ultra-rigid safety cage, and high-tensile steel architecture. According to PCauto data, hot-stamped steel accounts for 53% of the build, with high-strength steel making up 95% of the passenger cell. The original 2016 model had already introduced essentials such as Electronic Stability Programme, tyre pressure monitoring, and an electronic parking brake with Auto Hold, with Bosch-sourced ACC, FCW, and AEB offered on higher trims. The vehicle secured a full five-star safety rating in China NCAP (C-NCAP) crash safety assessments.

Market Performance & Verdict

The Trumpchi GA8 experienced a stark contrast between its ambitious market positioning and its actual commercial performance. At launch, it carried the responsibility of taking the GAC Trumpchi brand upmarket as a core pillar of the "Three '8' Flagship Strategy" (GA8, GS8, GM8), frequently serving as official transport for high-profile political events such as the National Two Sessions and the G20 Summit. However, retail consumer demand remained sluggish. In 2022, full-year sales reached just 316 units, accounting for a negligible 0.03% share of the executive sedan segment; monthly sales fell to an all-time low of 7 units in January 2023, before recovering marginally to 67 units in March.

Several factors contributed to its lacklustre sales: First, the brand image struggled to justify the pricing—in the RM150,000 to RM230,000 price bracket, buyers heavily favoured established joint-venture marques or more established local rivals; second, the Aisin 6AT gearbox drew criticism from some owners for low-speed hesitation and mild shift shock; third, amid the rapid rise of electrified new energy vehicles, a pure internal combustion engine (ICE) lineup struggled for market relevance; lastly, substantial dealer discounting later in its lifecycle severely hurt resale values, with entry-level 2020 390T Exclusive Edition units (with an official list price of RM156,800) heavily discounted to just over RM120,000 in certain regions. Ultimately, while the GA8 delivered well-rounded, genuine flagship credentials—from its potent powertrain specs and double-wishbone front suspension hardware to comprehensive Level 2 ADAS—it was held back by weak brand prestige, marketing missteps, and challenging market timing, preventing it from gaining mainstream market traction.
